Stan Lee is a writer, who worked in what's called the "Marvel Style. " It worked like this: Stan (or whichever writer) would write a detailed plot for a story. The artist (Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, etc. ) would do what's called "breakdowns, " meaning they would work out what would happen page by page and illustrate it. The finished art would go back to Stan, who would script the dialogue and captions. The upshot is that the artists had much more input into the story than they were given credit for; in particular, the Silver Surfer was almost entirely Jack Kirby's creation, since Stan pretty much just wrote "the Herald Of Galactus arrives. " The Marvel Style is less in favor today, as more writers prefer to write in full scripts. But there are quite a few who still work in the Marvel Style.
