Pandolfini' S Ultimate Guide To Chess
21 people found this helpful Great book for beginners or those average player who want to improve! 21 December 2020 - Most chess instructional material is " above the heads of beginner players because the material assumes you know more than you do! However, this book conducts a dialogue between a beginner player with a master player! It starts with the rules, pieces ( their values etc. then progresses from there. The step by step approach is very effective and non intimidating! I highly recommend this book for both complete beginners, or those ( like myself), Who haven't played the game for a while and need to brush up, and want to learn how to advance your approach to the game! very useful 2 January 2019 - to his book really helped develop my chess game. it does a great job of exploring the tactical and strategic nuances of a given move. the conversational style between the student and teacher is sometimes a bit hackish, but so be it. i found this book very well thought out and helpful 2 people found this helpful

The whole book is a dialectic between a chess "master" and a student. The dialogue includes a plethora of dad jokes that made me cringe on more than a couple of times. At times, the author was very repetitive, stressing a point well beyond needed. I can see the merit if one was to read the book without ever playing the game before but even for a very low-rated amateur like myself the repetition became tiresome. Besides those negatives I think beginners can take away s.. very useful to his book really helped develop my chess game. it does a great job of exploring the tactical and strategic nuances of a given move. the conversational style between the student and teacher is sometimes a bit hackish, but so be it. i found this book very well thought out and helpful A classic that walks through a chessic, Socratic dialogue between Teacher and Student through various movements of the Petrov Defense. General strategies and heuristics are enforced, as well as principles that should guide players through much of their beginning phases of their chess playing lives.

Ultimate chess strategy
As you learn to recognize principles at work, the game comes alive as something you can play, where it may have once seemed like either an overwhelming sea of options or conversely a rote sequence where only computers or brains that think like computers win. I think a teacher that can open up a world to you is the sort you want to learn from and Pandolfini's does that here. 3 people found this helpful 3. 0 out of 5 stars Very good, but with blemishes 7 February 2012 - This is a good book for players rated 0-1000. It has a lot of good points, but it also has a lot of bad points: First good point: comprehensive introduction starting with how the pieces move, working through the objectives of the game, and exploring many many rules of thumb. First bad point: positioning it as an "ultimate guide". The sales material implies that this book will have something for players of all levels, or at least something for players seeking to reach the ultimate level. I found very little in this book suitable for players of 1000 strength or higher.
Funny line out of context on p. 154 - "Remind me to become more discriminating"... The whole teacher-student back and forth got a bit tiring for me halfway through. There's a lot of valuable information in this book. especially for inexperienced players. I will definitely revisit it later but I had to move on to something else... A nice little introduction to the game, from how the pieces move to tactics to basic strategy. I would recommend it for anybody coming to the board for the first time. Not really for intermediate players. Pandolfini isn't nearly as clever as he believes he is... A good beginner book Get you up to speed with the basic philosophy of chess. The electronic version of the book makes difficult to follow the moves since the diagrams fall pages after or before their descriptions. Amazing book for a beginner with a wonderful dialectic format. But the kindle version is pretty old with lot of diagrammatic errors. However, the sutras conveyed are universal and will help one enjoy chess.

Ultimate chess moves
Good point: Pandolfini takes his time and talks about principles on each move. Bad point: some of the principled discussion is one-sided. Pandolfini (or his avatar the student) presents a weak move, and then Pandolfini (or his other avatar the teacher) presents half a dozen reasons why that move is weak. Then Pandolfini presents a strong move with half a dozen reasons why it's strong. This form of argument encourages people to make whatever they choice they want and then rationalize it. In my experience, most interesting weak chess moves have 1-2 things in their favor vs several against, and nearly all the strong moves have 1-2 drawbacks as well as lots of advantages. Good point: lots of diagrams -- enough that I didn't need a board at all to follow the book. Bad point: many typos and a few other errors in the diagrams and their captions. For $13 I want better proof-reading! For the sake of future editions, here are my errata: Diagram 99 is supposed to be a solution of Diagram 98, but instead is merely a duplicate of 98.
Same with Diagram 101 (duplicate of 100) and Diagram 103 (duplicate of 102 with a bad caption also). Diagram 116 is unlabeled. Diagram 117 is unlabeled. Diagram 117 is meant to be a solution of Diagram 116, but is a duplicate of 116. Diagram 215: incorrect position. Diagram 221: completely incorrect position. Diagram 252: typo in caption, hxg1 [sic]. Diagrams 266, 267, 278: diagrams and their captions are mis-matched, plus typo in caption, Kg5 [sic]. After diagram 330, in the text: "Black wins no matter who moves. " False -- White obviously wins with 1. a5. Before diagram 338: in the line given, white moves 3. Kc6 and 5. Kc6 again, should be 5. Kc5 and so on. (Black still wins. ) List of world champions: Carry [sic] Kasparov. Good point: a beginning player could profit from reading this book multiple times. I did find one discussion that illuminated me: a 4-to-3 pawn majority usually cannot force a passed pawn if the 4 group has a doubled pawn -- I didn't know that. This book could easily be a 4 with some improvement, and a 5, in my eyes, with a new edition.
For example, I have seen the statement in other books that king's pawn openings tend to lead to open games, whereas queen pawn openings lead to closed games. This book, on the other hand, actually explains why this is the case. Admittedly, the dialogue is sometimes contrived, and the humor is rather corny. But then, Pandolfini does not pretend to be Dave Barry; he is here to teach chess - and he does that very well. Very Good Beginner Book Published by User, 14 years ago This was a very good book for me (a beginner). The student-teacher dialogue made the information flow in a fun and easy to follow format, explaining a lot of the 'whys' for each move, but not in a mind-numbing way. I love this kind of learning format and hope more books are out there like it. I think it is very good for any beginner learning the game, from the bare basics to beyond that. Well done! The first book that any newcomer to chess should consider buying Published by User, 15 years ago This book is easily the best chess instruction book that I have ever seen for beginners and novices.

PUGtC has not presented me with many concepts that I haven't already figured out by myself, but it has greatly expanded my chess vocabulary and polished vague ideas in my mind into clear, solid objectives and rules. I liked the unusual style of the book - an ongoing teacher-student conversation - it helped present the ideas in a concise and memorable manner. That said, I found the at.. Worth reading for the Chess beginner, or for teaching basic principles to a younger player. The student-teacher dialogue format wears a little thin in spots, but it does help you to process and retain the information. Pandolfini is a phenomenal teacher, and he is especially adept at building up an overall thinking process that helps you make the transition from amatuer to ranked player.
