that are stored. Step 6 of 14 Program-data independence In traditional file processing, the structure of the data files is 'hard-coded" into the programs. To change the structure of the data file, one or more programs that access that file, should be changed. The process of changing can introduce errors. In contrast to this more traditional approach, DBMS access stores the structure in a catalog, separating the DBMS programs and the data definition. Storing the data and programs separately is known as program-data independence. Step 7 of 14 User View The way in which the database appears to a particular user is called user view. Step 8 of 14 DBA (Database Administrator) DBA is a person who is responsible for authorizing access to the database, coordinating and monitoring its use, and acquiring software and hardware resources as needed. Step 9 of 14 End User End users are the people who want to access the database for different purposes like, querying, updating, and generating reports. Step 10 of 14 Canned Transactions Standardized queries and updates on the database using carefully programmed and tested programs.
Top reviews from the United States There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2014 Verified Purchase I needed this for my class, and it was fine, but not great. The level of detail was pretty good and there were some well-developed examples, but as some other reviewers noted, the nature of the components building off one another meant that it might be hard to find the referenced schema in an earlier (or later) section of the book while you were looking at one section. And it didn't necessary give you the page numbers so you could flip back and forth easily. If they just added the page numbers that would definitely bump my rating up. Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2014 Verified Purchase This is a great fundamentals text. The section overviews guide you through the book in a smooth fashion without any surprises. The exercises reinforce knowledge without overwhelming and the language is not terse. This book does imply a basic familiarity with set theory, which frankly is an obvious prerequisite as this is not exactly a MySQL cookbook and focuses more on the theoretical concepts of database systems and less on their implementations / semantics.

Don't let that deter you. Set theory is not difficult to learn and reading this book will grant you all the knowledge you need to correctly design a database for nearly all commercial applications. The figures do take away from the effectiveness of the book in some situations. Some figures from 3 chapters previous are referenced, which will have you flipping back thick chunks of paper. The figures are also of poor quality for a 2011 publication. Not a huge issue, but could be better. Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2018 Verified Purchase Overpriced and hard to read. This was a required textbook, otherwise I would NEVER have purchased it. Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2013 Verified Purchase The book is very informative with detailed information on the history of databases and the theory of their design. However, it is written and structured very poorly. The book reads almost as if the author had a page quota that he struggled to meet, entire pages could be condensed into a few sentences without missing any information.

We have solutions for your book! Step 1 of 14 Data The word data is derived from the Latin which means 'to give'; data is real given facts, from which additional facts can be inferred. Data is a collection of known facts that can be recorded and that have implicit meanings. Step 2 of 14 Database Database is a collection of related data or operational data extracted from any firm or organization. In other words, a collection of organized data is called database. Step 3 of 14 DBMS (Database Management System) DBMS is a collection of programs that enables users to create, maintain, and manipulate a database. The DBMS is a general purpose software system that facilitates the process of defining, constructing, and manipulating database. Step 4 of 14 Database Systems A database system comprises a database of operational data, together with the processing functionality required to access and manage that data. The combination of the DBMS and the database is called database systems. Step 5 of 14 Database Catalog A database catalog contains complete description of the databases, database objects, database structure, details of users, and constraints etc.
